AUTHOR Reid, Douglas Arthur (2 June 1833-1924) medical student, King's College London, 1851; served in the Crimean War, 1855-1856. FORMERLY ASSISTANT SURGEON 90th LIGHT INFANTRY
PUBLISHED LONDON, THE ST. CATHERINE PRESS, OSWALDESTRE HOUSE, NORFOLK STREET, W.C. 1911
DESCRIPTION
With a number of illustrations from Photographs and Sketches taken during and after the Siege—not hitherto published—and a comprehensive Map, showing the position of the contending Armies in the various battles. DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF THE RIGHT HONOURABLE FREDERICK ARCHIBALD VAUGHAN THIRD EARL CAWDOR. "This book, does not pretend to be a history of the Crimean War. It is simply a record of events that transpired in and around the British Camp in the Crimea between January 1855 and June 1856, more especially in the Light Division, of which my regiment, the 90th Light Infantry, formed a part. I say "my regiment" designedly, because, it must be remembered, the medical officers were at that time gazetted to, and wore the uniform of, the regiments in which they served, exactly in the same way as the executive officers, and, as a rule, remained with the corps until promoted. They had relative rank according to length of service, but no military titles as in the present day—nor did they seek them. By adopting the term "memories" I consider myself relieved from the necessity of arranging the various incidents in strictly chronological order, although I have endeavoured not to take too much latitude in this direction. It was my custom to write a home letter every week from the time I left England until my return. I have those letters in my possession at the present time, eighty of them, and in the following pages I have had recourse to them when in any doubt as to facts or dates. Here and there I have had to refer to Kinglake, Russell or some other authority to ensure accuracy, and as a check upon any camp "shaves," contained in my letters, that might not be strictly trustworthy."
